GENERAL PURPOSE

Group fitness or aquatic instruction

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Supervision Received: The Fitness Instructor works under the direct supervision of the Parks, Recreation & Trails Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Persons appointed to this position must be able to perform all the essential tasks required by the position. The following statements are illustrative of the essential functions of the job, are not intended to be all-inclusive or restrictive and do not include other nonessential or peripheral duties that may be required.

Demonstrate an understanding of the mission and core values of City of Moab Recreation Department and MRAC in work and professional endeavors; accomplish performance goals established with the MRAC Director.

Plan and lead group fitness or aquatic exercise routines, choose appropriate music, choose different movements for each set of muscles and adapt to participants' capabilities and limitations. Observe participants and inform them of corrective measures necessary for safety and skill improvement. Teach proper breathing techniques used during physical exertion. Instruct participants in maintaining exertion levels in order to maximize benefits from exercise routines. Teach and demonstrate use of group fitness or aquatic equipment, maintain such equipment. Maintain a positive, motivational relationship with class participants.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience

High School diploma or equivalent. At least one national group exercise certification such as AFAA, ACE, AEA, ACSM, and current CPR and First Aid Certifications preferable. Minimum of one year Group Fitness Instructor experience.

B. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of practical fitness, biomechanics, and exercise physiology. Excellent interpersonal skills, fitness assessment abilities and injury prevention training
  • Knowledge of proper fitness or aquatic equipment use and maintenance; ability to advise participants as to proper exercise apparel and footwear.
  • Ability to accurately assess individual fitness levels and to offer alternatives during classes to accommodate all levels of fitness. Must monitor participants' progress and adapt programs as needed. Evaluate individuals' abilities, needs, and physical conditions, and develop suitable exercise programs to meet any special requirements 4. Ability to establish and maintain a good working relationship with other employees and the public, work irregular hours, perform a variety of tasks simultaneously or in rapid succession, maintain an upbeat and motivational demeanor.
  • Ability to provide students with information and resources regarding nutrition, weight control, and lifestyle issues.
  • Knowledge of and ability to administer emergency first aid, wrap injuries, treat minor chronic disabilities, or refer injured persons to physicians.

C. Special Qualifications (Licenses, Certifications, etc.)

Must hold a valid Utah Driver's license

Group Fitness Certification desirable

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Moderate noise. Physical activity will include standing, walking, reaching with hands or arms, squatting, jumping, stretching, climbing, balancing and talking or hearing more than 2/3 of the time, sitting, and stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling. Lifting requirements are 35 pounds. The vision requirements are close, distant, color peripheral, depth and ability to adjust focus.
