General Purpose

The Facilities Mechanical Technician performs maintenance and repairs on a variety of the City of Moab's mechanical and electrical systems.

Reporting Relationships

Supervision Received: The Facilities Mechanical Technician reports directly to

the Facilities Superintendent, and generally to the Public Works Director.

Supervision Exercised: N/A

Essential Functions

As part of a small team of employees dedicated to the maintenance and operation of City facilities, the Technician is responsible for the following:

  • Preventive maintenance and repairs on a variety of mechanical and electrical systems including, but not limited to; geothermal, HVAC, boilers, furnaces, evaporative coolers, electric motors, pumps, exhaust fans, fresh air intakes, lighting, plumbing, new equipment installations, and cooling towers;
  • Assessing and analyzing problems in electrical, mechanical, plumbing, or other systems;
  • Dealing with emergency repair problems with efficiency; and
  • Establishing and implementing a preventative maintenance program on all mechanical and electrical systems in City buildings.

This position supports other Facilities employees, as well as Public Works employees, by occasionally:

  • Assisting with maintaining parking lots, landscape, and outdoor areas adjacent to facilities as needed, including occasionally removing ice, snow, and debris from sidewalks and parking lots;
  • Performing light construction repairs as needed such as wall, ceiling, roof, flooring, and painting; and
  • Handling other maintenance and operational needs as they arise, including assistance with a variety of custodial duties, some office work such as copying, filing, faxing, and internet research regarding repairs, maintenance, and record keeping.

The Technician is expected to:

  • Work independently, as well as with others, to prioritize and complete tasks according to an agreed-upon schedule;
  • Establish and sustain professional and constructive working relationships with companies, contractors, and other individuals and organizations that interface with the City; and
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment; portrays a positive public image and Works with the public and other employees in a courteous and professional manner.

This position necessarily requires a level of professional discretion and confidentiality. As such, the Technician must be able to recognize sensitive and/or confidential information and keep such information confidential during the process of completing daily tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Education and Experience
  2. High School graduate and two years of job related experience

Required knowledge, skills and abilities

  1. Journey level proficiency of electrical, plumbing, and construction.
  2. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  3. Ability to perform light and heavy labor, such as moving furniture and receiving supplies.
  4. Basic knowledge of job related tools, and OSHA safety regulations.

Special Qualifications

  1. Availability to Work evenings and weekends, on call, and respond to job related emergencies.
  2. Upon employment must possess a valid Utah Driver's License.

Within the first year, must:

  1. Obtain Natural Gas Certification, and EPA 608 Certification
  2. Must obtain certificates of training in HVAC and Geothermal Maintenance

Work Environment and Physical Demands

The Facilities Mechanical Technician works inside and outside of facilities, in tight spaces, crawl spaces, attics, roofs, and high places. This position works outdoors in variable conditions, and performs light to heavy labor tasks. Tasks regularly include muscular strain, including walking, standing, stooping, reaching and lifting, and working from ladders. Talking, hearing and seeing are necessary for performing most essential functions. Common eye, hand and finger dexterity is required for most essential functions.
