Class Title: Baseball/Softball Umpire

Department: Recreation

Class Code: Seasonal, Part-time

Duration: Mid May-End June

Hours: Flexible weekday evenings some Saturdays

Essential Duties: The individuals appointed to these positions will be required to umpire baseball games, keep score, and assist in the administration of games. Additionally, employees will be required to assist office staff as needed and perform other related duties as required.


Specific Duties:

  • Attending paid umpire training clinics. Learning and knowing how to administer the rules of baseball and softball. (*Passing a certification test results in a higher pay, position on field also effects pay.)
  • Arriving 15 minutes prior to scheduled game time, dressed and ready to start games on time
  • Wearing appropriate clothing & protective gear as applicable (Most items provided)
  • Establishing positive and appropriate communication with coaches and players
  • Being consistent, fair and firm in calls made

Minimum Requirements: Knowledge of baseball rules, penalties, and hand signals which would demonstrate an ability to perform the job; and physical ability needed to perform the duties of the job. The ability to resolve conflicts and communicate effectively with supervisors, other employees, and the general public about softball/baseball and maintain control of the teams, coaches, and players is required. Previous baseball or softball experience as a player, coach, or umpire preferred.


Reporting Relationships

The Baseball and Softball umpires work under the supervision of the Ballpark Supervisor and the Moab City Recreation Manager. Umpires provide general supervision and support for the baseball and softball coaches and participants.

Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience, skills, knowledge, and education. Hiring for this position may be based largely upon an oral interview by phone or in person.

Physical/Environmental Factors: This work requires that the individuals stand on their feet for the entire game and deal with the public in sometimes stressful circumstances.


Work Environment and Physical Demands

Tasks may entail muscular strain, including walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, and lifting often in temperatures near or above 100 degrees. Talking, hearing, and seeing are essential to performing job requirements. Common eye, hand, and finger dexterity is required for most essential functions.
