The Sewer Service Worker I performs a variety of semi-skilled labor and maintenance functions in the Sewer Division.


Supervision Received: The Sewer Service Worker I receives general and close supervision from the Sewer Superintendent.

Supervision Exercised: None


Participates in work projects initiated to repair and maintain sanitary and storm sewer lines, lift stations, manholes, collection boxes and other facilities to insure proper and adequate sanitary and storm sewer flow for the City.

Operates equipment in digging and filling in trenches for new sewers digging around water mains and valves for repair work and unplugging sanitary and storm sewer lines.

Operates various construction and maintenance equipment such as; Backhoe, dump trucks, front-end loaders, sewer routing machines and tapping machines.

Performs a variety of semi-skilled pipefitting, plumbing and general maintenance work in laying new sewer and making sewer connections.

Checks and services assigned equipment as directed; reports mechanical problems for shop repair.

           May assist in maintaining, constructing and repairing streets, sidewalks, water meters/lines, and other public facilities; drives a snow plow as needed; may assist at the Wastewater Treatment Plant; may receive training at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. Maintains a clean and safe working environment; portrays a positive public image and works with the public and other employees in a courteous and professional manner.

 Education and Experience


  1. High school graduate or equivalent and


  1. One (1) year experience in the operation of light equipment


  1. One (1) Year experience in maintenance and repair of sanitary and storm sewer facilities


  1. An equivalent combination of related education and experience (i.e. work in construction, plumbing, excavation)

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Some knowledge of maintenance and repair functions.


  1. Ability to operate or learn to operate a variety of construction and maintenance equipment; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to engage in self-directed activities; ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions; ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees and the public.


  1. Special Qualifications (Licenses, Certifications, etc.)


Upon employment  must possess:


  • Valid Utah driver's license.


Must obtain within 1 year:


  • First Aid, CPR, AED Certification


Flagger Certification



  1. Work Environment and Physical Demands


            The Sewer Collections Service Worker II works in variable weather and traffic conditions with appropriate safety equipment. Must work safely in a variety of dangerous situations; including busy traffic situations and in/around trenches and excavations. Work will include safely entering confined spaces, manholes and vaults. The Sewer Collections Service Worker I may work in unpredictable circumstances and may be exposed to human waste and is required to receive Hepatitis A/B Vaccine. Tasks regularly involve muscular strain, including walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching and lifting up to 25-50 pounds.  Talking, hearing and seeing are essential to performing job requirements. Common eye, hand and finger dexterity is required for most essential functions.
